    Appel de dossiers pour les résidences et coproductions

Les résidences et coproductions du Studio XX offrent aux artistes une 
occasion unique d'expérimenter de nouveaux logiciels et de nouvelles 
méthodes de travail dans des visées de création et de production 
novatrices. Notre centre favorise les approches interdisciplinaires et 
accueille des projets créés par des collectifs composés d'artistes qui 
collaborent avec d'autres professionnel-les afin de répondre à la 
multiplication des langages et besoins techniques de plus en plus 
complexes. Le Studio XX a développé un réseau d'expert(e)s afin de 
répondre aux besoins de programmation et de techniques des résidentes en 
s'assurant de procurer parallèlement un encadrement théorique et/ou 
critique. Ce réseau appuie l'artiste dans sa démarche et contribue à 
créer une situation dynamique, stimulante et ouverte.

*Programme de résidences*

Cette année, aucune thématique n'encadrera les résidences. Donc toutes 
les thématiques seront considérées. Par contre, nous avons une affection 
particulière pour les projets innovateurs qui considèrent les 
orientations du Studio : soit l'utilisation des logiciels libres.

*NOUVEAUTÉ*

. *Résidence Matricules* :
Cette nouvelle catégorie de résidences vise l'utilisation des archives 
du Studio XX comme source ou matériau du projet. Un important projet 
d'archivage nommé Matricules a été mis en place au cours de la dernière 
année et permettra sous peu la mise en ligne des archives du Studio XX. 
Il s'agit d'un registre imagé et documentaire de l'histoire du Studio XX.
À noter, l'accès en ligne aux archives ne sera possible qu'à partir du 
premier avril.
Ce qui ne devrait pas vous empêcher d'imaginer un projet. Tous les 
documents originaux seront disponibles sur place au Studio.

Matricules, c'est plus de 3400 fichiers images, son, vidéo, textes 
critiques, communiqués, qui documentent tous nos volets : salons Femmes 
br at nchées, résidences d'artistes, coproductions et collaborations, 
projets et événements spéciaux, ateliers de formation, festival HTMlles, 
émission de radio xxfiles, revue .dpi. La base de donnée de l'archive 
Matricules relie les individus, événements et les documents et permet de 
passer d'un élément à un autre. L'interface principale de Matricules 
présente un tableau imagé de tout son contenu par type d'événement et 
par mois, une sorte de tissage qui illustre l'ensemble de l'histoire du 
Studio. Ce prototype novateur a été développé avec l'aide de Koumbit 
avec le système de gestion de contenu (CMS) Drupal, un outil de création 
de site Web libre. Dès le départ Matricules a été pensé comme une 
archive interactive où les utilisateurs ont l'opportunité d'en commenter 
les éléments de manière à pouvoir bonifier et corriger l'histoire écrite 
par le Studio. Ce site constitue un formidable outil d'archivage, de 
présentation et d'interprétation.

. *Résidence virtuelle*
Pour répondre à la situation répandue des artistes en région et à 
l'international qui souhaitent collaborer avec le Studio, mais qui n'ont 
pas les moyens financiers de se loger à Montréal pour la durée de leur 
séjour, le Studio offre des résidences virtuelles ---- ouvertes ou 
thématiques. En mettant à profit son serveur à large bande passante, le 
Studio prévoit un soutien technique à distance en fonction de chaque 
projet. Les participantes se verront allouer un espace sur le serveur et 
l'oeuvre réalisée sera publiée en ligne, hébergée sur le site du Studio 
pendant une période déterminée.

. *Résidence ouverte*
En gardant l'idée première des résidences ouvertes, le Studio XX 
continue d'offrir aux artistes un espace privilégié comme contexte libre 
de création pour les femmes qui recherchent un lieu d'échange et 
d'encadrement dans lequel elles peuvent définir un programme de travail 
autour de leurs préoccupations et de leurs démarches personnelles.

INFORMATIONS PRATIQUES

Toute proposition est examinée par un comité de sélection. Les projets 
sont choisis selon les conditions suivantes :
- oeuvres créées ou dirigées par des femmes artistes
- oeuvres d'art web, d'art-réseau, numériques ou audionumériques, 
installations ou performances multimédias innovatrices autant au point 
de vue du contenu que de la forme.
- oeuvres qui peuvent être réalisées avec les ressources matérielles 
disponibles au Studio XX (équipement, connaissance technique, ressources 
financières)

De plus, la sélection du projet d'une candidate devra aussi répondre à 
au moins 2 de ces critères :
- appuyer de manière significative et à point nommé le parcours d'une 
artiste
- s'inscrire dans une volonté d'expérimentation technique que le Studio 
XX juge prioritaire
- exprimer d'une manière pertinente et captivante un engagement 
théorique, politique et/ou social

Pour les projets acceptés, le Studio XX offre :
- un espace distinct réservé à l'artiste et ses instructrices pendant 8 
semaines
- un cachet de 750$
- un soutien technique de 45h (d'une valeur de 1125$ - non échangeable)
- un accès à l'équipement du Centre (valeur de 3335$ en location)
- la possibilité d'assister à certains ateliers de groupe (valeur de 
200$ à 300$)

Le Studio s'engage à diffuser le projet de l'artiste sur son site web et 
lors d'un salon Femmes br at nchées durant l'année suivant la réalisation 
du projet. Pour les participantes à distance, ceci se fait par le biais 
d'une présentation en ligne (via webdiffusion ou clavardage). Les 
résidences n'incluent pas le coût des déplacements et le per diem; 
l'artiste est responsable de trouver un arrangement pour son séjour à 
Montréal.

*COPRODUCTIONS*

Le Studio XX reçoit toute l'année des propositions de coproduction 
d'artistes débutantes ou chevronnées, de collectifs d'artistes ou 
d'organismes. Une description du projet et ses spécificités techniques 
doivent accompagner les propositions.

Studio XX met à la disposition des artistes son parc informatique Linux 
et Mac, ses équipements vidéos et audionumériques. Il donne accès à 
l'espace disponible sur un de ses serveurs afin de favoriser les 
expérimentations en réseau et les webdiffusions. Studio XX est membre de 
Ile sans fil et offre un accès Internet sans fil. Les projets sont 
choisis par l'équipe en fonction de leur qualité, de la disponibilité du 
laboratoire et de la disponibilité des ressources techniques. Les 
coproductions effectuées au Studio XX exigent l'autonomie des artistes 
tant au niveau conceptuel que technique, mais le Studio offre, si 
nécessaire, un soutien technique personnalisé - les frais exigés sont de 
25$/heure. Les projets peuvent s'échelonner jusqu'à trois mois. Il est 
nécessaire d'établir un échéancier et de réserver des plages de travail 
dans le laboratoire. Dans des cas très spécifiques, le Studio peut 
défrayer certains coûts encourus pour une coproduction ---- notamment 
des frais de formation de base pour les artistes participantes. Les 
productions/coproductions ne sont pas hébergées sur notre site web, mais 
nous dirigeons les artistes vers différents serveurs qui sauront 
héberger leur travail.

Le Studio XX encourage la diffusion des oeuvres produites en 
coproductions lors des Salons Femmes br at nchées. Les participantes 
s'engagent à faire mention de la participation du Studio XX, dans toute 
publicité du projet.

    Call for Proposals : Residency and Co-Production Programs at Studio XX

*Extended Deadline for 2008-2009 : April 15th.
Projects selection is announced at the end of April of each year.*

Studio XX has redefined its Residency and Co-Production Program in 
keeping with the diversity of approaches that have been brought about by 
new and multiple methodologies and processes being practiced by artists 
working with new media and the Web as creative platforms. Residencies 
are offered each year through three major axes identified below. We've 
done it in order to offer an improved context within which Québecois and 
Canadian women artists may conceptualize and create, and to better 
accommodate the evolving realities of contemporary networked practices.

*Residency Program*

This year, the residences are theme-free. All themes are eligible for 
consideration. That said, we favour projects taking into account the 
Studio's orientation and commitment to open source software.

*NEW*

*The Matricules Project Residency*
This new category of residency is centered around the use of the Studio 
XX archives as source material for a proposal. Last year, Studio XX 
embarked on a major archival project called Matricules which will allow 
the Studio to post all of its archival material to date online. It is at 
once an image bank and a depository of all of the Studio's writings and 
documentary footage to date.

Despite the fact that online access to these archives will only be 
available as of April 1, this should not prevent you from 
conceptualizing a proposal.  All of the original source material is also 
available at the Studio.  The Matricules Project is comprised of more 
than 3400 images files, sounds, videos, written critical texts and press 
releases documenting all our artistic  streams: The Femmes Br at nchées 
Salons, The Artist Residencies, Co-productions and Collaborations, 
Projects and Special Events, training workshops, the HTMlles Festival, 
XX Files radio interviews and .dpi articles.  The Matricules Project 
data base allows the user to cross-reference individual artists, events 
and documents, switching from one event to another. Matricules' main 
interface offers an image table of contents by event type and by month, 
providing historical trajectory of the Studio's activities. 

This innovative prototype was developed with assistance from Koumbit's 
Drupal Content Management System (CMS): an open source tool for web site 
creation. From the beginning, the Matricules project was conceived as an 
interactive archive allowing users to modify or correct the Studio's 
written history, where necessary. When the site is completed, it will 
ultimately be a very powerful archival, presentation and interpretation 
tool for Studio XX's members.

*Virtual Residency*
In response to a growing demand by women artists working outside of the 
Montreal region wishing to explore the different possibilities of 
on-line and/or networked collaborations, Studio XX is in the process of 
elaborating the mechanics of Virtual Residencies in order to facilitate 
the creation of works via other networks.

*Open Residency*
Open and self-directed, these residencies offer access to women artists 
wishing to deepen the experimentation phase of projects they are 
currently developing.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

Studio XX favours interdisciplinary approaches and welcomes projects 
created or directed by women artists or collectives working in 
collaboration with other professionals. This axis responds to the 
growing number of trans-disciplinary projects and their inherent 
technological challenges and complexities. Selected projects must be 
undertaken using Studio's available resources (equipment, technical 
knowledge, financial resources).

All submissions are reviewed by a Selection Committee. Selection of 
applicants is also based on at least two out of the three following 
criteria:

- Offering significant support and at an important point of the artist's 
development
- Resonant with Studio XX's priorities in terms of technical experimentation
- Relevant, captivating expression of theoretical, political and/or 
social engagement

Residencies are eight weeks in length. For accepted proposals, Studio XX 
offers:

_A $750 artist's fee
_45 hours of technical support ($1125 value)
_Access to the Studio's equipment ($3335 rental value)
_Possibility to participate in certain group workshops ($200-300 value)
_Distinct working space for the artist and her instructor

Studio XX will disseminate the artist's project on its web site, with an 
artist's presentation to be given within its Femmes br at nchées Salon 
Series in the year following completion of the project. For participants 
working from afar, the presentation will take place on-line via 
streaming or chat. Residencies do not include travel costs and per diem, 
and the artist is responsible for her living arrangements while in Montreal.

*Co-Production Program*

All year long, Studio XX accepts co-production proposals from artists as 
well as from collectives and artist-organizations. Emerging and 
experienced artists working with new technologies and curators are 
invited to submit project ideas including technical specifications.

The Studio provides a Linux lab and Macs, video an digital audio 
resources. Projects are selected based on quality, the availability of 
the lab and technical requirements. Co-productions carried out at Studio 
XX demand full autonomy from the artists on both a conceptual and 
technical level. These residencies require autonomy on the conceptual 
and technical level but if necessary, the Studio can provide 
personalized technical support at the hourly rate of $25. The projects 
can stretch over a three-month period.

During the residency, the artists will have access to Studio XX's 
computer, video and digital audio equipment. They will also have access 
to available space on one of the large bandwidth servers - ideal for 
network experiments and webcasting - and to a dispatcher for wireless 
Internet connections. It will be necessary to provide a fixed schedule 
and to book time in the lab.

It is possible for the Studio to cover certain expenses for 
co-productions, such as training fees. The productions and 
co-productions are not housed on our web site but we do direct the 
artists towards servers that can accommodate their work. Studio XX 
actively seeks to program artworks produced within the co-productions at 
events as the Femmes br at nchées Salon series.
