Le 7 mai dernier, Constanza Camelo présentait /Dilater ou contracter 
l'univers/, une performance où un groupe de 13 immigrants rendus 
aveugles par un passeport qui leur cachait les yeux traversait les 
couloirs du métro Berri-UQAM accompagnés de chiens-guides de la 
Fondation Mira au son d'hymnes nationaux diffusés sur des haut-parleurs 
portatifs. Puis ils allaient former un tableau vivant dans un autre 
corridor du métro. C'est de ce projet dont elle va nous entretenir en 
compagnie des immigrants ayant participé au projet.

Constanza Camelo a suivi auprès de la Fondation MIRA (2005) un cours 
type offert aux personnes dotées d'handicaps visuels. Ceci lui a permis 
de découvrir les mécanismes primaires de déplacement avec le chien 
guide. C'est à partir de cette expérience qu'elle a imaginé le projet 
Dilater ou contracter l'univers.

Ce projet a pour but d'expérimenter la manière dont les processus de 
perception et de représentation visuelles et moteurs expriment les 
divers niveaux d'adaptation au nouveau territoire d'accueil. Ce serait 
une façon de matérialiser des occupations territoriales véhiculées par 
le corps symboliquement «handicapé» du migrant.

Ce projet comprenant un aspect interactif et sonore a été réalisé dans 
le cadre d'une résidence au Studio XX.

Biographie ::

La pratique de *Constanza Camelo* matérialise des occupations 
territoriales véhiculées par le corps en art action, performance-vidéo 
et installAction. Le corps --- objet et sujet ---explore des 
interactions entre divers dispositifs transdisciplinaires opérés lors de 
cohabitations éphémères d'espaces publics et privés.

Par ailleurs, C. Camelo est cofondatrice du collectif We are not Speedy 
Gonzales, collectif qui met en scène une dynamique de l'identité 
transculturelle. Elle s'implique également dans la diffusion de l'art en 
tant que membre du Conseil d'administration de DARE DARE, centre de 
diffusion d'art multidisciplinaire de Montréal. Elle travaille comme 
chargée de cours à l'Université du Québec à Montréal.

Après avoir consacré 5 numéros au thème de la mobilité, /.dpi /clôt sa 
série avec une dernière parution qui aborde des oeuvres et des actions 
qui se déploient à travers des technologies tout en les détournant, 
parfois à des fins militantes :

californien attachés au Calit2 Lab à UCSD (University of California, San 
Diego) qui ont créé le /Transborder Immigrant Tool/, un appareil qui 
vise à orienter les immigrants dans le désert; une entrevue avec 
Constanza Camelo sur sa performance /Dilater ou contracter l'univers/, 
qui pose la question du territoire et des immigrants, projet réalisé 
dans le cadre de sa résidence au Studio XX et, en regard de la 
production des médias locatifs, un compte-rendu du jeu The Haunting, qui 
prend comme lieu d'investigation le Mont-Royal, issu du groupe de 
recherche the Mobile Digital Commons Network (MDCN).

On May 7, Constanza Camelo performed the project Dilater ou contracter 
l'univers, une performance (Expanding or Contracting the Universe, a 
performance). A group of 13 immigrants were blindfolded with a passport 
and escorted by MIRA dogs, they walked through the hallways of the 
Berri-UQAM metro station to the sound of national anthems playing back 
on portable speakers. The group then moved to another section of the 
station for a staged live portrait. The artist will discuss the project 
in the presence of the immigrants who participated in the event.

In 2005, Constanza Camelo took the standard training course for the 
visually handicapped offered by the MIRA Foundation. This instruction 
enabled her to discover the primary reflex mechanisms for getting around 
with a guide dog. She conceived the project "Expand or Contract the 
Universe" as a result of this experience.

The aim of this project is to explore how the process of perception as 
well as visual and motor representation, express the various levels of 
adaptation to the new host area. This approach will show the territorial 
occupations communicated by the symbolically "handicapped" migrant.

This interactive sound project was produced during a residency held at 
Studio XX.

Biography ::

Constanza Camelo's work is essentially based on territorial occupations 
through the body in performance art, video performance and 
installAction. The body --- object and subject --- explores interactions 
between different transdiciplinary postures during different ephemeral 
cohabitations of public and private spaces.

In addition, C. Camelo is a cofounder of the artist collective We are 
not Speedy Gonzales, collective who creates situations around the 
dynamics of the transcultural identity. She is also a board member of 
the artist's run center DARE DARE. She lectures at the Université du 
Québec à Montréal.

exploring works and actions that use and misuse technologies, at times 
with activist intentions.

In this issue: An article on the West Coast activist collective from the

Transborder Immigrant Tool, a device that helps immigrants finding their 
way in the desert; An interview with Constanza Camelo about her 
performance /Dilater ou contracter l'univers (Expanding and Contracting 
the Universe)/, produced during a residency at Studio XX, where she 
questions the notion of territory and immigrants; And a piece about 
Mobile Digital Commons Networks' The Haunting, a ghost-chasing game that 
invests the Mont-Royal and rethinks the production of locative media.

And to take along those evening summer strolls, /.dpi/ offers two 
Ipod-downloadable flipbooks by artist Natacha Clitandre.
