Director's Diary: July 2008
Over a lifetime, human bodies undergo dramatic transitions, guided by
Nature's hand. Some changes are known only to the body's owner, others
announce themselves loudly to the world. How we embrace our turning
points defines everything that follows.
2007-2008 was life-altering for Studio XX. The year began with a forced
move that ultimately brought XX to its fabulous new home. Then, the
stars provoked changes of key staff and of longtime members of the
Board. In October 2007, an accomplished *HTMlles 8
<http://www.htmlles.net>* international biennale dazzled us, proving to
what extent members worldwide appreciate this singular event. In that
same instance, we launched the *xxxboîte*: a gorgeous collector's
artifact comprising original texts + a DVD. A flurry of high-pressure
grant writing, inspiring artists in residence, cutting-edge workshops,
top notch editions of *.dpi <http://dpi.studioxx.org>* and major
projects in development subsequently kept the XX team seriously busy.
In May, on a clear day when we could see forever, we completed and
launched the *Matricules <http://www.studioxx.org/fr/matricules>*
project, amongst wonderful company, at Hexagram_Concordia. *Three years
in the making, and spanning twelve years of creation, research and
exploration at Studio XX,* *Matricules is technically one of the world's
largest public archives of digital artworks by women. *
As I write, we have just completed the financial audit of this big, busy
year and the team, the Board and I are about to embark on an intensive
Strategic Planning Workshop with consultant Martine Sauvageau. This
workshop focusing on the Studio's next five years, is a first for the
Studio and the timing is perfection itself. The resulting Strategic Plan
will be presented to you, dear members, along with our statements, at
the General Assembly in the Fall.

Studio XX received an extraordinarily high number of excellent
submissions to our Artist in Residence
<http://www.studioxx.org/en/residencies> programme this Spring. Thank
you for honouring us with your magnificent visions... 2008-09 features
highly innovative projects, beginning with the workshops <#1> described
below, and we look forward to unveiling all our Programming to you.
We also launched Autonomy and Activism: our first intensive professional
development workshop entirely dedicated to using multimedia Open Source
Tools. Artists Allison Moore, Reisa Hatayama,Katherine Kline, Darsha
Hewitt and Risa Sage received intensive training that took their
proposed projects to entirely new, and exciting, ground.
Sincerest thanks to our founders, teachers, contributors, members,
funders, volunteers, friends and to the Studio's talented team and Board.
We have become, more than ever, /A Studio of One's Own /. Inside and
out, online and off line, here and abroad.

Professional Development Training Workshops
Studio XX is accepting project proposals to be created within the
framework of four professional development workshops to be given by
experts in the field of art and multimedia intended for women 1 <#_ftn1>
artists.
1. Digital Ludologie (Game Theory) : Artistic Exploration of
Creativity in Video Games with Blender 3D's Open Source game play
generator
*This workshop offers participants the opportunity to broaden the
expressive content of their projects by incorporating game play
structures into their work. By developing the interactive components of
their digital art, artists will explore the most specialized tools from
the world of video gaming. *
Participants will have the chance to explore the different components of
an interactive game project. Theoretical aspects of design relating to
the construction, the content, and interactive concept development will
be explored to optimize the game structure in the artist's works. Those
who wish to broaden their proficiency with moving images using Open
Source software will be thrilled by the versatility of Blender 3D, its
game engine and the integration with Pure Data; the real-time graphical
programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing.
The workshop is ideally suited for artists who have practical experience
in media arts (web, video, audio and installation) wishing to develop
interactive components and expressive content for their work through
game play structure.
Topical presentations by professionals from the industry will be
scheduled to coincide on appropriate dates during the course.
Presentations will also address Blender 3D, interactive scriptwriting
and theoretical issues.
*Format: Artists will acquire a solid foundation in: animation, 3D
character modeling, texture environments and an initiation to the "Open
Source" play generator of Blender 3D.
Participants will learn the key technical components required for a 3D
production:
* Modeling: Lighting, texture, materials and colours.
* Animation: Armature and animation techniques, with real-time
workflow incorporated into the game engine for Blender or Pure Data.
* Prerequisite: Basic computer knowledge and the desire to have fun.
* Dates: Session 1 from October 4th to December 13th 2008, Session 2
from January 10th to March 21th 2009
** Cost: $190 per session for 45 hours of instruction including free
access to the Studio's Lab.*
Allison Moore, 2007 AAutonomy et Activism Workshop Presentation.
Photo : Stéphanie Lagueux 2. Autonomy and Activism: Multimedia
Design on Linux and "Open Source" Software.
*The workshop will give nine women artists the opportunity to discover
and develop the creative potential of multimedia design on Linux.*
Participating artists will conceive and create a project though a series
of exercises and become proficient with the latest and most popular
multimedia open source applications (freeware with Open Source code).
Participants will work in a quickly evolving and dynamic creative space
adapting the tools that are appropriate for them. Workshop sessions will
feature talks, demonstrations and directed work.
*Linux Training*: This introductory course aims to demystify the Linux
operating system as well as other Freeware. By the end of this course,
participants will be able to configure and adapt their operating system
and be able to acquire and install the freeware that corresponds to
their needs. The aim of this course is to make Linux more accessible to
artists by giving them the opportunity to immediately put into practice
what they have learned. Participants will also learn how to obtain a «
Live » operating system like UBUNTU and UBUNTUSTUDIO which runs from a CD.
*Introduction to image processing with The Gimp*: An introduction to
image processing and image manipulation with GIMP freeware.
*Initiation to creating Web pages with Drupal*: Introduction to creating
Web sites with Drupal, the system for dynamic content management.
Participants will produce a Web site to showcase a portfolio of their
work such as: digital images, animations, video and sound.
* Prerequisite: The desire to work with free software.
* Dates: Mid-October 2008 to Mid-February 2009 (To be confimed)
** Cost: $190 for 36 hours of instruction including free access to the
Studio's Lab.*
3. Media Space: Instruction on MAX-MSP and micro-controllers
*This workshop will give nine women artists the chance to realize a
multi-media work by offering them the opportunity to gain theoretical
and practical knowledge of the multiple components in a multi-media
work:* sound, video, interactivity, Internet, programming software
(MAX/MSP Jitter) and physical programming (electronic circuit, ARDUINO
micro-controller).
The instructor and media artist *Patrice Coulombe* will guide
participants through the process of the software. Emphasis will be on
the essential techniques and notions of Max/MSP and participants will
learn and master elements including: sound options, video manipulation,
and physical interactivity. Any formatting or practical creative
questions that arise during the workshops will be discussed. Artists
will have free time access in the laboratory to fully develop the media
components of their works. By the end of the workshop, artists will have
mastered the necessary tools and skills to fully develop all the media
components of their work.
Guest media art practitioners will also be invited to discuss their work
and approach.
Format: * Courses have a supervised workshop component. 2 sessions of 8
classes are offered. The first session will focus on learning MAX/MSP
and Jitter through projects that implement sound and video. The second
session will primarily focus on learning programming and concentrate on
the technical aspects (sensors and electronic circuits) at an
intermediate level of MAX/MSP.
* Prerequisite: A basic knowledge of computers and multimedia
applications is recommended. Programming experience is an advantage.
Participants should have a simple project they will work on during the
workshop.
