New @ Studio XX

Studio XX is delighted to welcome Myriam Yates who, since the beginning
of Septembre, is the Studio’s new programming coordinator. Myriam is a
well known media artist is in the Montréal art scene and we are very
pleased to have her as part of our team.

We would like to thank Sophie Le-Phat Ho and Jake Moore who were the
interim programming coordinators during the 2005-2006 season. We would
like to highlight the quality of the programming they developed during
their presence at the Studio and would like to show our gratitude to
both of them for their great generosity and dedication. We wish them the
best of success with their future projects.

Event X : A Whole Decade of Feminism in Art and Technology!
5-6 October 2006, at Monument National

In 1996, Studio XX became the first feminist artist-run centre in North
America as a non-profit organisation with the main objective of
supporting technological creation, exploration and critique by women. In
order to highlight its 10th anniversary, Studio XX invites the public
and all people engaged in the media arts to a conference on October 5th
and 6th 2006 that will look back on the last ten years so as to inspire
the ten years to come! Event X will feature lectures and panels by local
and international artists and curators, as well as performances by
Canadian artists, at the Café and Hydro-Québec Studio of the Monument
National (1182, St-Laurent Blvd.).

In a world where an increasingly large number of women are
technologically savvy, but where the expression “cyberfeminism” still
leads to confusion, it is of special relevance to be thinking about the
present state of affairs by measuring the distance achieved over the
last ten years. Inspired by an article on new technologies that featured
in Wired magazine and was entitled “10 Years that Changed the World”,
Studio XX wants to examine its effect and affect as a site of education,
production, information, dissemination and exchange within the networks
that it contributed to build, in order to optimise its action for the
upcoming decade.

Resident Artist :: Isabelle Choinière

Call for submission [September 11]
Media space – MAX/MSP/Jitter & microcontroller workshop

- Training on the audio, visual and interactive components of
multi-media production.

Studio XX requests proposals for interactive audio and/or video projects
to be produced within the framework of two professional development
workshops intended for female artists.

Proposals for the first session should be straightforward and possible
to realize in the context of the beginners’ workshop starting October 2006.

Please send your proposals and CV to
ateliers at studioxx.org

<mailto:ateliers at studioxx.org>A request for proposals will be made in
November 2006 for the advanced workshop beginning January 2007.

Workshop 1 (October 2006): Beginners

The general aim of the workshop is for female artists to learn about the
various audio, visual and interactive components of multimedia
production by creating a digital work using MAX software. Using MAX is
essential in terms of understanding the technical language and
manipulating the basic audio, video and interactive tools used in
digital creation.

*************
Le Studio XX ne distribue pas MAX. Vous devez soit posséder une license
de ce logiciel, soit utiliser les stations informatiques disponibles
pour les participantes.

Contents : Workshop 1

_Image
DV camera, CODEC, colour processing, spatial processing, ratios, digital
video in general except editing.

_Audio
Spatialization, file format, digital conversion, synthesis, time and
spectral processing.

Dates
September 11: deadline for project proposals
September 11–15: participant selection period

Workshop 2 (January 2007): Advanced

A practical Max workshop where participants will learn how (Basic Stamp
and Arduino) microcontrollers work and how to construct small electronic
circuits to carry out programmed functions. The workshop will enable the
artists to master the tools necessary to fully realize all aspects of
multimedia projects.

Contents: Workshop 2

_Interactivity
Interface-user, motion tracking, sound tracking, sensors, MIDI protocol
and OSC, computer networks, and Internet.

_Circuits
Basic Stamp, electronic components, reading graphs, constructing
sensors, motor control circuits.

The submissions deadline for the second workshop will be announced in
November 2006.

These two workshops are designed to develop the professional skills
necessary to using new technology as a creative tool.

The training provided by Patrice Coulombe will allow participants to
increase their artistic and professional skills by learning:
- to use Max software with a view to creating a digital work the
language specific to audio, video and interactive creation
- sensor construction techniques simple electronic circuit construction
techniques
- about the functioning of microcontrollers.

Studio XX will present the resulting works within the framework of a
Femmes br at nchées salon.

Call for Artists
Nov-Dec 2006 "Sound Of Musing" show:

The Small Gallery @ Eyedrum is seeking artists who delve in the world of
sound; and this ain't no American Idol! Between November 11 and December
23, 2006, the Small Gallery will provide an intimate setting for
visitors to get comfortable while listening to your sounds through
headphones. Visitors will then be encouraged to record their thoughts on
paper while listening to the work, hence the "musing". This sound show
will be a multi-artist
installation and is open to all sound artists whether you design
digitally or capture clandestinely. Artists are encouraged to submit
more than one track. Please note, all
submissions are considered final, and will be presented as such. Mail or
drop off cds in paper or jewel tone case with title, artists' name and
contact information clearly written on face of cd.

Deadline: September 11, 2006.
