" Each of the solo pieces created for
this series began with some form of field recordings and sampling
from wireless and acoustic sources, from the inner space of
a mouth or a stomach's indigestion, to the fast cuts of conversation
overheard, to the radio frequencies of power tools, to ionosphereic
dub. Later on, sounds sought and overheard were processed
in studio, organized, composed, and mixed down.

I wanted to represent a more raw state of composition, and
so gathered some of the artists from the series together for
spontaneous compositional combustion. This jam allows for
unexpected unedited sounds to mesh and clash as we play them.
Through structured improvisation the group can play samples
and signals as though they were instruments: sampling live
from radio and walkie talkie signals, field recordings, and
ambient sound from a mic set up outside the window. Add a
theremin (another instrument using radio oscillators) and
four turntables, and you have the Central Dispatch live jam.
