>> New artist in residence at Studio XX
Sylvie Chenard

We have the pleasure of welcoming Sylvie Chenard as our next artist in residence starting January 6 until Valentine’s Day, 2004. Sylvie will be working on Fais ça toi-même! (Do It Yourself), a research project for an interactive, feminist, multimedia intervention. Her residency questions different aspects of the cultural, social and political mess that confronts us daily with the rise of communications technology as well as the increase in anti-democratic and anti-ecological developments worldwide. More to come… Welcome Sylvie!

>> New call for submissions :

DIY Thematic Residency
Option : Virtual

Studio XX is re-opening its call for submissions for its thematic residency program. The possibility of making it a virtual residency has been confirmed and the dates have been adjusted.

Deadline: January 9th, 2004
Residency Dates: February 27 - April 4, 2004

This year's programming undertakes the exploration of the idea DIY: Do It Yourself. The evocation of the theme not only predisposes us to an explicit autonomy, a reference to action, a self-sufficiency, but also towards technological responsibility - to consciously develop choices that can be made regarding artistic approaches which often have larger cultural and socio-political implications. It is necessary to place responsability in the hands of each person, to witness ingenious imaginaries, pragmatic propensities that take innovative forms in counter-networks, auto-surveillance, generative art and free software initiatives with regards to the Web, to name just a few.
The Studio favors interdisciplinary approaches and welcomes projects created by collectives composed of artists working in collaboration with other professionals. This replies to the growing number of transdisciplinary projects and their inherent technological challenges and complexities.

Residencies do not include travel costs and perdiem, and the artist is reponsible for her living arrangements while in Montreal. However, in response to a growing demand by women artists working outside of the Montreal region, and who also wish to explore the different possibilities of on-line and/or networked collaborations, Studio XX is open to experiment with the dynamics of a long-distance, residence, i.e. 'virtual'.

For accepted proposals, Studio XX offers:

- $500 artist's fee
- 30 hours of technical support (value of $750)
- Access to the Studio's equipment (rental value of $2500)
- Possibility to participate in certain group workshops (value of $200-$300)
- Distinct working space for the artist and her instructor.

All submissions are reviewed by a selection committee. Residencies are six weeks in length. Studio XX disseminates the artist's project on its Web site, with an artist's presentation given within its Femmes br@nchées Salon series in the year following completion of the project. For remote participants, the presentation takes place on-line via streaming or a chat.
