Spring is here! and it’s time to clean. Why not donate some of your old hardware to reBoot Quebec (http://www.rebootquebec.org) they redistrbute used computers to OSBL’s and charitable associations located in the greater Montreal area, and are always looking for usable systems to repair and redistribute.

As well, reBoot will be joining us at XX on April 11 from 6 –9pm for our 48th Femmes Br@nchées, called; At what cost new media. Panelists from XX and reBoot will be exploring the environemental price of new technology and looking at ways we can help lighten the ecological footprint of digital devices. All are welcome.

Panel discussion volunteers

I am looking for some short term helpers for the panel discussion on April 11th. I need a couple of experienced childcare providers to set up a play area outside the Studio (weather permitting) and near the couches in the back.We will provide small (sugerless) snacks if you can bring some books and toys. Please contact Miriam@studioxx.org.

I am also looking for a couple of volunteers to help us poster in the neighbourhood (le plateau) and host a small bar during the event. If you are available for a couple of hours to poster and and/or tend bar on the night of the 11th if you are interested please contact Miriam@studioxx.org

Leadership group needs a web guru

Westhaven is still looking for a computer guru to teach Photoshop to a youth group with approximately 12 members. Located in south NDG, Westhaven provides leadership training and homework help to kids considered to be high risk. They are looking for a (very) part time volunteer teacher to conduct weekend workshops in web literacy and Photoshop, the candidate must be comfortable teaching in english. How much does your computer really cost?

We all know that styrofoam cups and hairspray are bad for the environement, but what about that new hard drive you just bought? Join us and find out, on April 11th from 6 ­9pm at 338 Terrasse st- denis.

Studio XX members Rebecca Lancaster and Chrisa Hoika will join members of reBoot Quebec William Ference and Scott Glass in a discussion exploring the environemental risks associated with discarded technology, also discussed will be the activities and projects undertaken by OSBLs and community orgs to offset these risks on a local, national and international level. Childcare will be available, please call the Studio to register your child not less then 3 days in advance.

Free workshops for youth with Artefact Montreal

Creative project for queer/questioning youth and their allies

Artefact Montreal will be holding workshops at Studio XX each Wednesday night from 5-9pm on various digital creative arts programs including; Photoshop Quark, Dreamweaver and Flash.

The workshops are free and open to all GBLTQ youth and youth who in solidarity with the queer movement. For more information or to register please send an email to : info@artefactmontreal.org or visit their website http://www.artefactmontreal.org

Get busy inside your computer this spring!

What exactly is an ATA cable? What kind of memory does my G3 use and why do I never have enough of it? Why does the bomb appear on my moniter every time I open the fridge while the computer is running? If questions like these provoke your ire and your curiosity, why not sign up for Studio XX’s first ever hardware basics course. Get familiar with the stuff that makes your machine tick (and crashwhile learning to troubleshoot and repair minor hardware problems, as always, have fun.

This 4 week course is being offered as a Co-production between reBoot Quebec and Studio XX. The cost of the workshop is $55.00. beginning April 28th and running each monday night from 6-8pm. Register with deborah@studioxx.org. Class size is limited to 8 participants so register early.

"…In the spirit of Porto Allegro"

Saturday the 5th of April 2003 from 9am- 5pm come to the UQAM Social. Over the day attendees will come to together to learn and participate in a proactive and hopeful way, much in the spirit of Port Allegro itself. Th econference will take place at the Pavilion Judith Jasmin. Essential to this day is the publics participation in the diffusion of information and debate on sustainable and viable alternatives to the global marketplace, emerging from the Global Social Forum.

This debate and discussion will centre around six themes; participative democracy, student movements, agriculture, alternative media, culture, and militarisation. Each of these themes will be convered in conferences and ateliers. This conference is an initiative of students at UQAM who particpated in events at Porto Allegro
