#grep|grrl is a women into linux, computers, free software IRC channel on the indymedia irc server and exists since august/september this year. though, it is not at all affiliated to any existing space/squat/event.

#grep|grrl is about computers and how use we them.. we are in a situation where we learn permanently. the computer is a tool to us (even, sometimes, we are too passionately occupied with it..) - we are convinced that one can learn to use a computer, the same way we learn using a hammer, the oven, a car.

we use gnu/linux for stability reasons, out of curiosity, for political reasons; but our principal reason is that we want to understand the machine. the possibilities offered by gnu/liux to be a part of its development, the access to comprehension, participation and knowledge exchange give us the possibilty to be independent of The Geek. we want to be independent: we want to be able to make a website, administer a server, know how to protect our
privacy on the net, that is: know how to use the resources that are offered to us. the ultimate defeat is not to have the keyboard in our hands but to watch someone else do it, and: not to understand what's actually going on
there, on the screen, (and thus in the interior of the machine which seems superior to us at this very moment).

#grep|grrl is an IRC channel that wants to be a space of mutual exchange and open discussions. it is not a girl-exclusive channel, although it is made by girls for girls, because that still seems important to us.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
The ( )ette Collective is a cultural activist group who insists on exploring issues surrounding feminism. These issues encompass power hierarchies of gender, race, class and sexuality. We are interested in practises, ideas and mere suggestions that serve to dissect social dictates.
Through the vehicle of a film festival this ( )ette project is seeking to examine the artist's ability to document, critique, seduce and manipulate ideas and audiences while considering the complexity of visual culture. One of the mandates of this festival is to provide an audience to the audience-less.

We expect you to consider all genres: drama, experimental, documentary, comedy, satire, sexual, controversial, non-narrative, narrative, political and personal.
We expect you to submit your work formatted in: VHS (NTSC), DVD (NTSC), MiniDV or DVCAM(NTSC), or 8/Hi8/Digital8(NTSC).
We expect you to mail us you work by:
THE DEADLINE MAY 1, 2005.
We expect that we can not pay artist fees. Please remember to include a SASE for tape return. All artists whose work is shown will be included in a festival catalogue and program. Please include an artist statement, sypnosis, biography and contact information. Please indicate if you would like to be included in our DVD publication.
