HTMlles @ CITY OF WOMEN
10th International Festival of Contemporary Arts
PAST TRANSITION - WELCOME TO THE FUTURE?
Ljubljana, Slovenia > 01. - 07.10.04
http://www.cityofwomen-a.si/2004/e_intro.htmIn 2004, the year of Slovenia's accession to the European Union the annual International Festival of Contemporary Arts CITY OF WOMEN will present its 10th anniversary edition - Past Transition - Welcome to the Future?

04.10.04 > The Future of Cultural Work - and (feminist) cultural practice
> lectures and round table discussion

Current debate in economic and political theory points to the model function of the cultural sector for the neo-liberal globalised economy: creative, mobile, flexible, precarious individuals, and project based, fluid forms of production and organisation. How do we as (women) artists, producers and organisers, continue to produce in creative and flexible conditions without advocating the neo-liberal system? What are the best strategies for promoting and enabling a diversity of non-mainstream artistic expression in an increasingly commercialised cultural environment? How do we see the future of work, and critical, feminist cultural practices? With practitioners from Albania, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Slovenia, UK…

Art Residency/Programming for the Art's Birthday 2005: ART NETWORK, ARCHITECTURE AND VIRTUAL CITIES

Studio XX is offering artists a unique opportunity to experiment and create new works in a dynamic, open, and stimulating environment. In the course of next November, December, and January, Studio XX will invite an artist to realize an art network project involving programming at their new laboratory Open Source. This residency not only falls within the framework of this year’s annual theme of science fiction (or, the invention of space-time), but will also be developed with the idea of exhibiting it as part of the Art's Birthday Art Network event, which finishes on 17 January 2005.

New deadline for submissions: Friday, 24 September 2004
Residency Dates: next November, December and January

Acoustic Space – MAX Workshop

Studio XX is looking for audio projects to be developed within the framework of a professional development workshop aimed at female media artists.
MAX is a useful if not essential tool for interdisciplinary and tech artists alike.
The general objective of the training is to give ten female artists (5 beginners and 5 advanced) the opportunity to develop everything from the technical language to mastering basic tools by creating a multimedia project using MAX software.
MAX is an extremely user-friendly programming environment that enables users to conceive their own computer programmes in order to carry out specific tasks. Instead of using text language (such as C++ or BASIC), objects and functions are represented by a graphical interface.

Patrice Coulombe, instructor and electro acoustic composer , will systematically teach how to use MAX software, basic technical notions necessary for understanding sound, as well as answer questions, on formatting or composition for example, which may arise as participants use the software. The artists will have access to free time in the laboratory to develop their own creations. At the end of the workshop, the artists will be able to master the necessary tools to fully develop the acoustic components of their work.
Studio XX will circulate the resulting creations within the framework of a salon
Femmes br@nchées.

Project Schedule

_ Number of participants: 10 artists. Two groups of five media artists (web, video or installation): one beginners/intermediate (based on sound experience) and one intermediate/advanced group (based on sound experience)
