.dpi
seeking collaborators!

Here it is, new from Studio XX, an online review that is feminist, critical and current, that promotes exchange and considers issues about both women and technology. .dpi is socially and artistically committed, allowing unconventional voices to be heard. We encourage .dpi readers to share their reactions, visions and contributions helping to make it the lively, plural and inspiring forum we want it to be. We invite the enticed writers and art-lit-techno-ladies amongst you to express their interest in participating by contacting Sarah Brown at info@dpi.studioxxorg with “I love .dpi” written in the subject line.

For a sneak preview of the first issue, visit http://dpi.studioxx.org and click on volume 1.
Included in this first issue are: Heard But Unscene, an article by Anna Friz that examines the chronic under-representation of women in DJ and laptop culture, interviews by Karen Wong with recent Meta Femmes Branchées guest Kathryn Smith of South Africa and by Leila Marshy with Studio XX’s last artist in residence, Sylvie Chenard. Don’t miss Tech Talk by cyber-columnist Val Walker and Meduz – Sarah Brown’s special illustration for this inaugural issue of .dpi

Art Residency/Programming for the Art's Birthday 2005: ART NETWORK, ARCHITECTURE AND VIRTUAL CITIES

Studio XX is offering artists a unique opportunity to experiment and create new works in a dynamic, open, and stimulating environment. In the course of next November, December, and January, Studio XX will invite an artist to realize an art network project involving programming at their new laboratory Open Source. This residency not only falls within the framework of this year’s annual theme of science fiction (or, the invention of space-time), but will also be developed with the idea of exhibiting it as part of the Art's Birthday Art Network event, which finishes on 17 January 2005.

The Western Front Gallery’s worldwide invitation to twenty centres of art production was inspired by the science fiction novel The Artificial Kid by Bruce Sterling and proposes the construction of an imaginary metropolis from a critical point of view, with special importance being given to acoustic works. Studio XX is interested in receiving resident project submissions, which apart from being technically innovative also explore current feminist issues and contemporary themes and realities relating to women. XX favours an interdisciplinary approach and welcomes projects by groups composed of artists collaborating with other professionals such as programmers. At the heart of this is the idea of sharing technical expertise and autonomous learning. The artists will be chosen by the program committee composed of members of the board of directors, media artists and media art representatives, as well as the program coordinator.

Studio XX will provide accepted projects with:
- A separate space reserved for the artist and respective instructor for a period of eight (8) weeks
- 30 hours of technical support (at a value of $750)
- Access to the centre’s equipment (at a rental value of $2,500)
- Possibility of attending certain group workshops (at a value of between $200 - $300)
- A financial contribution of $750

The Studio also commits itself to diffusing the artist’s project on their web site and at a public event.

Deadline for submissions: Friday, 17 September 2004
Residency Dates: next November, December and January

Acoustic Space – MAX Workshop

Studio XX is looking for audio projects to be developed within the framework of a professional development workshop aimed at female media artists.
MAX is a useful if not essential tool for interdisciplinary and tech artists alike.
The general objective of the training is to give ten female artists (5 beginners and 5 advanced) the opportunity to develop everything from the technical language to mastering basic tools by creating a multimedia project using MAX software.
MAX is an extremely user-friendly programming environment that enables users to conceive their own computer programmes in order to carry out specific tasks. Instead of using text language (such as C++ or BASIC), objects and functions are represented by a graphical interface.

Patrice Coulombe, instructor and electro acoustic composer , will systematically teach how to use MAX software, basic technical notions necessary for understanding sound, as well as answer questions, on formatting or composition for example, which may arise as participants use the software. The artists will have access to free time in the laboratory to develop their own creations. At the end of the workshop, the artists will be able to master the necessary tools to fully develop the acoustic components of their work.
Studio XX will circulate the resulting creations within the framework of a salon
