we are back in montréal and are filling in the blanks of our travels with new posts that perhaps will seem out of order. While i know this is not the determined structure of blogging, i am struck by the how and why this has come to be. This has happened for the very same reasons as dominant culture history so often has missing chapters and voices; due to lack of access to the tools required to record an event in time, and, due to the demands on the participants to be in the world, not in observation of it. This slippery space is the communication space of today.
Many places we have been have either not had internet access, or we have not been able to access it due to other human reasons. These social circumstances are as critical to how one gets "the word out" as anything else we may encounter.
It is also a very strange thing to be both the documentor and the document. Real time reporting on an experience one is having in real time is commonplace these days. i have attended many a Mutek event where audience members are watching through their mobile phones, forming a sea of screens as the fourth wall facing the performer who is in turn looking into their own screen. In this kind of theatre, the fourth wall is not breached but instead is simulaneously transmitting.
Mediating devices, mediating experience, making media to share experience.
So, as the observation blog post times don't line up with the day of experience perhaps consider how that used to always be true; records were made after the fact, consider the nonlinearity of history, or, just look at the remarkable images and note the names of the places and people who have so generously allowed us into their works, studios and galleries. they are magic. i am grateful.
