JOYA'S WEB PIX

June 19, 1996

This week's pix are another grab bag and offer sites for the activist and the couch potato. The first is a site that has garnered much publicity in the last few months on the internet circuit. It's called the McSpotlight Home page.

In 1990 McDonald's sued Helen Steel and Dave Morris, two activists involved with London Greenpeace, for allegedly producing a factsheet entitled "What's Wrong with McDonald's" which criticised almost all aspects of the company's policies and practices. McLibel is now the longest civil trial in British history, and has stimulated worldwide publicity and protests. As no legal aid is available in libel cases, they are defending themselves funded entirely by donations from the public. The issues they have brought to the public eye are McDonald's nutritional value, their labour conditions and their recycling and waste management. McDonald's in quite an uproar about this negative publicity, which includes this massive, well-put together web site. Here is part of a RealAudio interview with Helen Steel, where she discusses the impact of the McSpotlight web site:

My next pick of the week is probably a favourite of fast-food gluttons, beer guzzlers and Simpsons fans: it called Homer's Proverb. This is undoubtedly the best Simpsons sound site I have ever seen, with literally hundreds and hundreds of sounds from all the characters on the show. The site is full of great images, including animated graphics and drawings from the show. The site even makes all sounds downloadable for both Mac and Windows users. Here's a couple Homer faves:

For all of you Simpsons fans who need assorted sounds to spice up your desktop, or just annoy your roommates, Homer's Proverb is for you.

So, my message for all of you this week is: Be aware. Be 'doh. Surf the net. You never know what you might find.
