June 12, 1996 This week's pix are quite a grab-bag full of goodies, catering to every taste and whim. Music and sound are key to these sites, which are focused on real sound artists, and pathetic old TV stars trying to become legitimate. My first pick is a real treat for all you jazz fans out there. It's called Jazz Central Station. On this site there are monthly featured artists, who not only have downloadable clips of their own work but also of their favourite jazz artists. There are also CD reviews, an interactive page as well as a new artist's page to feature up-and-comers. One of Jazz Central's recently featured artists was Eliane Elias, a native of Brazil who now lives and works in New York. Elias is a renowned jazz pianist who, besides having just released her 7th album on Blue Note, is also the chair of the International Association of Jazz Educators and teaches at the Manhattan School of Music. Here's a clip from one of her piano duets with Herbie Hancock, called "The Way You Look Tonight": Play eliwayyo.wav The second site is quite apropos to CKUT's affiliation with McGill University, and its most famous alumnus, William Shatner of Star Trek fame. It's the Capt. Kirk Sing-A-Long Page, where good ol' Bill tries to prove to mankind that he is a real artist, not just the captain of the Starship Enterprise. Here's Bill's spoken-word rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds": Play lucy.au Wasn't that inspiring? William Shatner - the man, the myth. Who would have thought someone out there would write a web page about his botched singing career? Hey, there is a market for this stuff. Believe it or not. So, my message to our faithful listeners is: Be different. Be open-minded. Surf the net. You never know what you might find. |
