June 5, 1996 In the spirit of the retro revolution, this week's pix have been culled from those whose nostalgia for the past have inspired their web creations. The first site of the week is The TV Themes Home Page . The author of this site, Patrick G. Kenny, has collected hundreds of TV themes from the past and present, including comedies, dramas, game shows and cartoons. It's all there for us to indulge in. Re-live your wasted youth sitting glass-eyed at the television. Download some cool TV themes! Seeing as our show is XX-inspired, my sound offerings for you are from some great ol' chick shows from the 70's. Take a listen: Play theme from "Laverne & Shirley" (1 min.) If you didn't recognize that, shame on you! That was the theme from Laverne & Shirley, a favourite of mine back when I could barely read. Quite a tacky show, but an inspiration nonetheless to girls making it on their own. You know, the cool thing about this site is the fact that these themes can be used to spice up your computer in ways you might never had thought of. Imagine having the "Scooby Doo" theme play when you turn on your computer, or hear a snippet from "ER" when you do something wrong. It's all possible when you throw these TV themes into your sound control panel. By the way, the clips you're hearing today are being played using SoundMachine, a handy little application that takes up less than 200K on your hard drive. To download SoundMachine, go to www.shareware.com and type in soundmachine. It will give you a listing of download sites, and then you can play away! Play theme from "Josie & the Pussycats" That was the theme from Josie & the Pussycats, a cool girl cartoon again from the 70's. So the address again for the TV Themes Home Page is themes.parkhere.com/themes. The second pick of the week is another tribute to the past, The 80s Server. This is a new site and one of the best I've seen yet, and it's still not finished. This site offers a Shockwave'd introduction, and a ton of great images and clickable links. Dedicated to the greed decade, this site is divided into Entertainment, News, Fashion, Technology and on-line games, and, of course, icons of the 80s. Everything you ever wanted to remember, or forget, for that matter, about the 80s is here. From Madonna, to Reagan, to denim&emdash;it's all there with a click of your mouse. The good thing about this site is that it's interactive, and allows you to contribute your own thoughts and memories from that period. They also have a neat "Name That Tune" on-line game that allows you to test your knowledge of the songs that made the charts. This month's featured QuickTime movie is A-ha's "Take On Me." Check it out&emdash;it's got the XX Stamp of Approval! That's all for this week. For all you listeners out there: Be retro. Be groovy. Surf the net. You never know what you might find. |
