HTML/Dreamweaver


Instructor:
Course Length: 6 3-hour sessions

Pre-requisites:
· Intermediate knowledge of Macintosh and Internet.
· Some knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is an asset.

Lesson 1:

Intro- Assess the comfort level of each member, ask what they want to get from the workshop, what kind of website they hope to create; emphasize hands-on approach

What is a website?
- Introduction to mark-up languages (html xhtml)
-- Introduction to ftp
-- exercise : writing some html code in BbeditWhat is Dreamweaver?
-- Run through the Toolbars (Object, Properties and Launcher)
-- Exercise: define site from sample site in Dreamweaver

Lesson 2:

Writing mark-up /file structures
- Learn about more tags (tables, divs, spans img etc)
-- Links relative and absolute
-- How to logically structure your files and folders
- Exercise: write a table in html and add some link information

Design in Dreamweaver
- Discuss issues of accessibility (alt tags)
- Discuss issues of good design vs. bad design by showing various examples
- Discuss usability issues, screen size and resolution
- Introduce visual properties for tables, document properties, internal links, external links, and email links

Lesson 3:

Introduction to stylesheets
- Learning CSS syntax
-- Style-sheet hierarchy (element, page-level, global)
- Exercise: write a style sheet with two tag definitions and attach it to a page of html

Stylesheets and behaviours in Dreamweaver
- Introduce CSS (create font style sheets, and redefine tags)
- Give an overview of navigation, image buttons and text buttons
- Talk about what each person needs to bring for next class, for individual site

Lesson 4:

Stylesheets continued
- Learning CSS syntax
-- Div tags and id tags for lay-out
-- Exercise: keep writing a style sheet with two id definitions and a floating div
-- Introduction to web standards

Inserting media and developing a site map
- Demonstrate how to insert various media (Flash, QT, etc.)
- Go over site maps, discuss good navigation
- Set up individual sites, root folder, ftp information

Lesson 5:
- Open Studio with assistance

Lesson 6:

- Search optimization tools,
- On-line tutorial sites
- Registering your domain
- Showcase and critique individuals’ sites
