Studio XX firmly believes in empowering women to use
communication technologies as tools in their own work by passing
on skills, knowledge and confidence.
The Studio offers computer training in a friendly and supportive
environment featuring small class sizes, access to computers
for extra practice outside of class time, and competitive
prices. Participants are encouraged to incorporate their own
goals for learning into workshops and contribute their own
knowledge and experience to the classes.
Most of our workshops are bilingual, unless otherwise stated.

MICROCONTROLLERS AND PHYSICAL COMPUTING : Initiation to ARDUINO
Tuesday April 1st till May 6, from 6pm - 9pm, 18 hours / 275$
This class is for people who wish to learn about electronic circuits and the programming of ARDUINO microcontrollers. With practical exercises done during the class, you will learn how to program ARDUINOS to construct simple interactive systems. We will explore a large variety of sensors et we will use circuit bending techniques with synthesisers, controllers, toys game pads and sensors, to give them new properties.
Html, CSS and Design for Web 2.0
Monday, March 31 until April 21, from 6pm - 9pm, 12 hours/ 200$
Html basics and and a good understanding of cascading style sheets will allow you to master the art of graphic design for the Web to create interesting layouts for your websites.
AUDIODIGITAL PRODUCTION WITH ARDOUR
* Beginner level: Thursday, April 10 until May 1st, from 6-9pm, 12 hours /$200
* Intermediate level: Friday, April 11 until Mai 16th, from 6-9pm, 18 hours / $275
“You can use Ardour to record, edit and mix multitrack audio, produce your own CDs, mix sound tracks for video, experiment and work on multi-broadcasting installations, in short, have a good time. Ardour consists of: multitrack non-linear recording, non-destructive editing, total automation, a mixing console equipped like hardware equipment, numerous plug-ins that can be controlled by hardware. It carries out functions similar to ProTools, Nuendo, Cubase SX, Digital Performer, Samplitude or Sequoia (Mac Music) Except that Ardour is free!

• IMAGE PROCESSING WITH THE GIMP
12 hours / $200 The Gimp is an open source software that is an extremely interesting alternative to Photoshop. Like Photoshop it touches up and creates images, and is available for various platforms. Through this you will learn how to create, transform and optimize images specifically for the Web using The Gimp. There will still be time to move onto Photoshop… http://www.gimp.org/
• 3D MODELLING WITH BLENDER
18 hours $ 275 Blender has its unconditional fans, because you can do almost anything with Blender: 3D modelling, rendering, montage, animation. This Open Source multi-platform software is now recognized by the videogame industry and on-going training is abundant online. Why deprive yourself for any longer? • PURE DATA
18 hours $275 Pure Data is a modifiable programming environment in real time for the processing of audio, video and graphic samples. The course will emphasize creation and sound manipulations using this interface. http://puredata.info/

• Drupal: DYNAMIC WEBSITE CONCEPTION
18 hours /$275 Why make a static website that requires expensive tools when you can make a dynamic one using online open source software!? In this workshop dynamic websites made with web-based applications called content-management systems (CMS) will be introduced and explained. Participants will learn to install customize and style an easy to update and maintain website using Drupal, a well-known Open Source software. http://drupal.org/

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is developed by artists and designers as an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain. This workshop will introduce participants to the basic building blocks of programming and assist them in developing simple artistic applications. http://processing.org/
** A small practical advice: Mines of Knowledge are available out there, floating around in cyberspace, about all the software we teach at Studio XX. Forums, IRC channels, video tutorials are freely accessible by doing a simple search in a browser. To maximise the benefit you will get out of our courses, prepare yourself in advance by doing a few tutorials online! Have fun learning!

Are you a multimedia arts practitioner ready to make the leap to free and open source software (FOSS)?
Studio XX is hosting a series of workshops based on open source tools for artistic creation. The series starts with an introduction to the Linux operating system then focuses on practical software for graphics and audio processing along with 3D imaging.

The main objective of the workshop is to enable six artistes - via the production of a multimedia artwork - to appropriate the multiple components of multimedia: audio, video, interactivity, streaming and programming in MAX/MSP jitter as well as physical computing (electronics and ARDUINO microcontrollers) on a theoretical as well as practical level.
